How Thugli got Vic Mensa to support a remix they couldn't share on Soundcloud

Toronto-based DJ/Production duo Thugli have been cranking out Trap remixes of Hip Hop hits over the past three years. Those remixes have garnered the attention and support of some of the biggest artists in dance music including Diplo. This has lead to a number of opportunities for the duo to work with some of the most established labels and names in the industry as a go-to source for dancefloor smashing remixes. Last year their original track "Run This" was nominated for a Much Music Video Award (Canadian MTV Video Awards).

A few weeks ago they wanted to give away a remix they did of Vic Mensa feat. Kanye West — "U Mad". They were unable to share it on SoundCloud due to recent changes in the Soundcloud takedown process.

They decided to try out Receiver as a new way to give free music to their fans and supporters. Once their page was set up at Thugli.com, the remix started to get love from a number of music publications. Over the course of one weekend, they received press from Hypetrak and RunTheTrap, amongst others. The track started to blow up on Twitter, in part due to them asking their fans to tweet the track in exchange for the download. Fans on Twitter and Facebook drove 150% more traffic to their music than the coverage from some of the top music blogs on the web.

Since all of these new fans were tweeting about Vic Mensa’s new track, Thugli was able to get Vic Mensa to take notice.

I'm trying to hear this thugli u mad remix

He heard it, liked it and supported it which only got more fans to check out Thugli’s site.

Receiver’s tools currently focus on leveraging the biggest channels in the world — Facebook and Twitter — to evangelize and grow your fan base. People talking about you will always give you a better chance of attracting new fans (rather than just having fans simply follow you). It just so happens for Thugli, their new fan is one of the hottest rappers in the game right now.
